Riku uses darkness, which has seeped into his senses to the extent he can "smell" darkness on other people. The more a person is corrupted by darkness (whether they be evil, or otherwise have a lot of dark emotions like rage or envy, etc.), the stronger their scent is.

It's pretty useful for distinguishing identities, even if people try to conceal who they are, or figuring out who is likely to be an enemy based on how much darkness they have. Most characters will carry at least some trace of darkness, even the incorruptibly good types; only Princesses of Heart like Kairi are completely free of darkness. Demons and similar such characters would have a much stronger scent of darkness than humans.

This is where you come in! I'm going to assume unless told otherwise that your character has an unremarkable amount of darkness, to avoid infomodding. But if your character does have any noteworthy amount -- or lack of -- the stuff, then comment here. Thanks!

Adell, being a demon, will have quite a bit of inherent darkness. That said, Adell's attitude and outlook is generally very heroic, so despite obviously being able to identify him as a demon, Adell won't show up as evil or corrupted. Basically, what darkness naturally occurs in a demon is all there is.

Kyrie has very little darkness in her heart, so she's pretty close to a Princess of Heart in that respect.

Tidus has more light than darkness, but he has some strong emotions there at times that fall more into the latter category, and Riku might or might not notice that he has a tendency to hide it.

Kain has... A FUCKTON OF DARKNESS LURKING WITHIN HIS SOUUUUUL. Practically enough to be a whole other person! It's a lot more darkness than most average humans have, so it'd be significantly noticeable.

Unless you count her having been mind-controlled for a long time as leaving some kind of imprint, Terra's about as purehearted as you can get without being one of those Princesses of Heart. That can probably go for Mjrn, as well. Rydia is largely an innocent, but has some strong emotions, not always of the positive variety. She's largely come to terms with what happened to her, but could be set off by other things.

Kairi has nada, Princess of Heart here. Hooray!

Rapunzel... considering she's a Disney Princess which most of the Princesses of Heart are, I'm imagine she'd be somewhat similar to Ariel and Wendy, since they were both believed to be candidates for Princess of Heart but turned out not to be (Wendy more so, but that might have just been Hook's determination that she was more than anything else). And since Riku took part in at least rejecting Wendy, he'd probably notice she had very little. Feel free to notice the similarities and all.

Adding for Zephyr:

Zephyr would have more darkness than the average person, and is fairly significant due to the nature of what causes its presence. For one thing, he has blood on his hands from a murderous rampage (of children, none the less, though he was a child himself); he's a murderer by trade (bounty hunter, but it applies; in this case though, it's very very rarely innocents unless part of a job and never civilians); and his emotions, when he does get angry, go somewhat haywire. Most of the time he's apathetic, but when he gets irritated it would be much more noticeable from that perspective. The guilt from the massacre is always present, and is something he feels he deserves to die for, so that would always be noticeable. He has confronted his past and come to terms with it, but has not gotten over it. It's unlikely he ever will.

Overall, the darkness stems from his past actions, but his present self is leaning more to the side of good than bad.

Nina probably has just a little bit more than your average person, with it being entirely of the "negative emotions" variety. If Riku is capable of identifying different types of darkness (I wouldn't know—I'm almost totally canon-blind here), then he may possibly recognize that Nina kind of hates herself a bit, which is otherwise something she won't readily admit to anyone unless she really trusts them.

Seifer is... well, he's certainly not a good person, so he's likely to have a significant amount of darkness due to that, as well as remnants from when Ultimecia had her claws in him. But he's decent enough (if something of a jerk), although I'm not sure Riku'd be able to pick up on that.
